About Course

About this course

Healthcare EVS Technician: Technical Skills prepares new and current environmental services technicians to clean and disinfect a hospital the way infection prevention, nursing and surveyors expect. Every lesson uses real hospital situations: reading isolation signs, putting on and taking off PPE in the right order, keeping a disinfectant wet for its full contact time, cleaning an occupied room around a patient, turning a discharge room fast without missing a surface, and handling sharps, spills and waste safely.

What you will learn

  • Your role on the healthcare team and why EVS work is patient safety, patient experience and patient flow
  • HIPAA, professional conduct and how to communicate with patients, families, nurses and dispatch
  • How germs move through the environment, and hand hygiene that breaks the chain of infection
  • Standard and transmission-based precautions, isolation signs, and the right order for putting on and taking off PPE
  • Cleaning chemicals and disinfectants: reading the label, EPA registration, contact time and chemical safety
  • Cart setup, microfiber, fold-and-flip, and clean to dirty, high to low
  • The occupied room clean step by step, and what EVS does not touch
  • Discharge and isolation room cleaning, mattress checks and accurate bed status
  • Waste streams, sharps, blood spills, exposures and linen handling
  • Floor care from daily mopping to stripping, refinishing, burnishing and carpet care
  • Working safely: body mechanics, workplace violence, fire response and finding a person down
  • Quality: inspections, fluorescent marker and ATP checks, heat maps and using feedback

How it works

  • 100% online and self-paced: 12 lessons plus a graded capstone case assignment
  • A practice quiz after every lesson, a 24-question case quiz and a 40-question final exam
  • Three printable job aids: Patient Room Cleaning Card, Precautions and PPE Card, and Waste, Sharps and Spill Card
  • About 7 hours in total

Please note: This course gives you a certificate of completion. It does not replace your hospital's orientation, competency validation or required training such as bloodborne pathogens, and it is not a BLS or hazardous waste certification. Your hospital's policies and product labels always come first.
